MARTY FRIEDMAN: I Was Disappointed by MEGADETH's Final Studio Album
August 19, 2002Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman has admitted that he found the group's last album, The World Needs A Hero, "a little disappointing" and has indicated that his proposed band with fellow ex-MEGADETH members Dave Ellefson (bass),Al Pitrelli (guitar) and Jimmy DeGrasso (drums) will feature a sound far removed from that of the Mustaine-led combo.
"I haven't heard [MEGADETH's recently-issued] live album [Rude Awakening], but I'm sure Pitrelli did a great job handling the guitar work," Friedman commented on the final MEGADETH release. "The Hero record, though, was a little disappointing for me, especially the cover photo. The music was very well done, but the style that they played re-confirmed for me that it was the right decision to leave the band when I did. It's very good, but just not my style.
When asked about the musical direction planned for the "new MEGADETH" band being formed by him and the other former members of the group, Friedman responded that "there is no new MEGADETH. If the other members and I create a band, it will be a completely separate entity."
"I left MEGADETH so I would not join again even if it reformed," Marty added. "However, I'm still friends with all the members, so I would have no problem working with any of them in a different capacity."
